Let’s understand that Dyslexia is not a disease to be cured or prevented and PHONICS alone is NOT the answer for struggling readers. Many parents are disillusioned when their child is still struggling even after completion of a phonics program.
What is the solution then?
The answer lies in having the child undergo not just any regular phonics program but one that incorporates MULTIPLE APPROACHES.

Dyslexics are smart; they have average to above average intelligence .
They have difficulty processing sounds and teaching them phonics without bringing about PHONEMIC AWARENESS or strengthening their VISUAL MEMORY, SEQUENTIAL MEMORY and other visual and auditory perceptual abilities is bound to fail.

Children with a learning difficulty perform extremely well in academics and in their careers if they are taken through a reading program early on in their life that is:
-
Tailor made for them (IEP )
-
And includes
-
phonemic awareness activities
-
activities for development of visual and auditory perceptual skills.
-
Multisensory approach (a method where multiple senses are employed during learning)
-
Use of manipulatives
-
graded reading practice
-
contextual reading
-
a focus on their UNIQUE areas of difficulty… they cannot be put into the “one size fits all” teaching methodology
-
REMEMBER EARLY INTERVENTION is the KEY to SUCCESS.
